I carried out my training in the UK (London, Taunton, Portsmouth and Plymouth), as well as Auckland in New Zealand and Adelaide, Australia.
I was appointed as a consultant in 1999 and have held roles as clinical service lead, training programme director and head of school of postgraduate medicine.
I have represented emergency medicine on guidelines and reports for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD).
I am currently president of the College of Emergency Medicine and council member of the Royal College of Physicians.
